127,000 passwords stolen from gaming site

2010-03-31

The Finnish Älypää internet trivia game site is closed after being broken into and having an estimated 127,000 Älypää user names, passwords and email address leaked onto the internet.

Sanoma Entertainment states that it has 'taken measures to bolster security' since the incident and says that the Älypää user registry does not contain credit card numbers or personal information. Police are currently investigating the data breach and the company is recommending that all users change their passwords on other sites if they have used the same password as the gaming site.

Fernando Herrera, head of online gaming at Sanoma Games, said "We are taking this very seriously. Data theft is a serious crime, and we are working closely with authorities to find out who did this and what the effects are."

The Finnish national computer emergency response team's Ari Husa said "The fact that data from the Älypää site was stolen is not the most worrisome thing. It's that people often use the same password and user name on other sites. There have already been cases where people have tried to use the leaked information to gain access to other sites like email."
